Munetaka Murakami is one of the most accomplished baseball players on the international circuit. A player who is likely to be made available for signing by a MLB club with significant interest this coming 2026 offseason. This all sets up to make him the latest Nippon Professional Baseball League (NPB) star to make the jump to the Majors and make an instant impact. Let's examine his resume and discuss his successful Japanese baseball career, as well as why it will make him a highly sought-after commodity in the 2026 MLB Offseason.

Murakami has spent his entire professional career to this point playing in the NPB for the Central League club, the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. The 25-year-old first baseman/third baseman's major trait that makes him an attractive prospect for major league clubs is his power bat. This trait has been his calling card since his high school days and has remained at the forefront of his skill set.

Murakami began to make a name for himself by hitting 52 career home runs in high school. This power display would only continue after he went in the first round of the 2017 NPB Draft with the Yakult Swallows earning the right to sign him. Now, as he finishes his 8th season with the club, Murakami has built an enticing resume that cements him as one of the best players the NPB has seen in the last decade. The young slugger’s trophy case includes two Central League MVPs, a Rookie of the Year, a 2022 Triple Crown, and twice has led the league in home runs. To highlight his best season was his 2022 campaign where he hit .318, with 56 homers, 134 RBI , while drawing 118 walks and posting a 1.168 OPS. Accumulating all these awards goes along with career numbers of a .272 batting average, with 242 home runs, 635 RBI, and a .953 OPS, which includes a six-year span of averages of 37 home runs and 99 RBI.

In the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Murakami further got to showcase his star potential on a national stage for Team Japan. Despite having an overall underwhelming tournament, he came up clutch in two of the biggest spots in Japan’s Gold Medal run. The first was a walk-off two-run double versus Mexico in the semifinals that propelled Team Japan to the Championship game versus Team USA. Then, in said game, Murakami hit a game-tying 432-foot homer off Merril Kelly in the championship game. For the tournament, he hit .231 with three doubles, one home run, and 6 RBI, but those two moments alone further increased the buzz among stateside observers and scouts.

Now with the NPB playoffs approaching and thus we inch closer to his posting, speculation will continue to grow as to his suitors and potential destinations. It has already been rumored that top clubs like the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, and even Mariners have either sent scouts to his games or displayed interest. But this may just be the start of a plethora of teams that may make an offer to him in the 2026 offseason. Now, some recent drawbacks to his stock include an oblique injury that has caused him to miss significant playing time this year. Pair that with a perceived lack of defensive ability to stay at third base and his increased strikeout rate over the past couple of seasons, and there are concerns. Plus, there have also been reports saying he may delay his coming to America to rebuild his stock, which may scare suitors. But overall, this type of international talent will still be hard to pass up this offseason if available. Especially in a league where power has become invaluable to the success of MLB lineups.

For now, we will have to wait and see if Murakami makes the jump to the MLB. With stars like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki making recent waves in the Majors, Murakami hopes to continue the recent string of major prospects to come from the NPB and immediately star on the stateside stage.
